Garimella Must Go Press Conference Charges UVM Administration with Manufacturing a Budget Crisis and Presiding through a Climate of Fear and Callous Disregard
March 29, 2021
Burlington, VT—UVM United Against the Cuts, a coalition of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members, held a press conference today to call for the resignation of University of Vermont President Suresh Garimella, including for his role as Purdue University vice president of research in continuing the $8 million Camp DASH research study that brought significant harm to vulnerable children and teens of color.
In light of new discoveries about the finances of UVM and its fund-raising arm the UVM Foundation, the coalition also called out the administration for manufacturing the university’s so-called budget crisis and pushed for the reversal of cutbacks that are gutting liberal arts; shuttering programs such as the Campus Children’s School; and damaging UVM’s educational mission. Press conference participants, including students and an alum, further underscored a frightening campus climate in which critics of the administration are threatened with discipline while students’ pandemic needs and troubling instances of racist threats go unaddressed.

The press conference was held as the coalition’s petition of No Confidence in the Leadership of Suresh Garimella neared 3,000 signatures.
